RSCE Talent Growth Week Invigorates Staff Development

Mark Kaheru

The Regional Service Centre in Entebbe (RSCE) launched its first-ever Talent Growth Week in August 2025, with energy, inspiration, and a wealth of practical tools. The 5-day activity, which started on 18 August, was built around the empowering theme,  "Leveraging Your Current Job to Build a Meaningful Career,"  and culminated in a dynamic speed mentorship event.

Organized by the Human Resources and Talent Management Unit (HRTMU), this series’ theme, “Leveraging Your Current Job to Build a Meaningful Career.”, was well received across the Centre and the week offered a rich blend of featured presentations designed to empower staff to take charge of their careers and align their values with the mission of the United Nations.

HRTMU designed the week to focus on different daily subthemes with the first day’s focus on Leadership and Ethics in Action. It opened with a powerful keynote on Leadership and Ethics in Action by RSCE Director, Paulin Djomo, who shared his personal UN journey in a session titled "Leadership, Management & Teamwork in a Global Setting." His reflections on resilience, integrity, and service set the tone for the week.

Chief HRTMU, Matthieu Narcisse Elombo Mengu, delivered a presentation on "Aligning Your Behavior with Your Work Ethics and Organization" and Chief of Client Services Section, Benta Achieng Aseto, closed the day with a spirited discussion on "Beyond Titles: Building a Professional Network that Opens Doors."

Tuesday featured inspiring stories from colleagues who have navigated diverse career paths. Timothy Mulindwa Sajjabi, Finance Officer, shared lessons from his journey in "Milestones, Mentors & Mistakes" while Phoebe Kyanjo, HR Officer, offered insights on "Staying Grounded While Moving Forward."

Wednesday was all about practical tools and strategies with Uniformed Personnel Service Line Manager, Emily Ingosi, demystifying the UN application system and Personal History Profile (PHP). Career Development Officer, Pamela Pendo Lwakabare, led a hands-on session on crafting compelling CVs, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles.

Thursday looked to the future with a Mind-Blowing Tour of AI Tools to Accelerate Your Career, presented by Rishan Mohamed, the Founder and CEO of HiringCoachAI. He demonstrated how the platform combines personalized AI insights with proven strategies to help staff communicate the best of themselves through every application.

The week culminated in a vibrant speed mentoring event on Friday morning, where the theory of the week turned into practice. Fourteen dedicated mentors from across the Centre generously volunteered to engage with over 55 eager staff members. The dynamic, rapid-fire format created a palpable buzz of energy, fostering fun and spontaneous conversations that provided personalized career guidance, opened doors to new perspectives, and powerfully strengthened the RSCE's culture of collaboration and cross-functional support.

As staff left the week energized—some with new mentors, others with fresh CVs, and many with renewed confidence—Talent Growth Week proved that growth is an ongoing culture. Talent Growth Week, Series 1, reaffirmed RSCE's commitment to nurturing talent, fostering ethical leadership, and building a workplace where every staff member can thrive.

HRTMU plans to hold this activity, with different themes, three times a year, with the next edition already planned for November.
