The UN Federal Credit Union in Entebbe and the Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE) celebrated Earth Day on Thursday 17 April 2025 by planting 44 fruit trees and an assortment of herbs and shrubs around the UN Entebbe Campus.

The Earth Day which is marked on every 22nd April is celebrated under the theme Our Power, Our Planet in 2025. The aim of the celebration is to raise awareness about environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, climate change, and endangered species.

Over the years, the RSCE has planted over 200 trees and various plants as a fulfillment on a commitment to make the campus green, clean and a home for staff and other wildlife that exist in the space.

“We, as the RSCE, made a commitment years ago to plant as many trees as possible and keep our environment clean and green. And it is very welcoming that this effort has sparked a similar response from our colleagues at UNFCU.” Said Mr. Paulin Djomo, Director RSCE at the tree planting event.

“Man-made changes to nature such as deforestation accelerate the speed of destruction of our planet and therefore it is our duty to take action and restore mother nature. So I urge you all to get involved and invest in a better future. Plant more trees, reduce your carbon footprint, do away with single-use plastics and engage in recycling.” He added

In a bid to keep the environment clean and to conserve it, the Centre also has a number of initiatives it started like reduced paper use, proper refuse collection, plastic recycling and the customized iEnduulu app to report environmental issues.

The Deputy Director RSCE, Ms Nalini Contreras also commended the UNFCU on the initiative to join the campus greening project. She noted that the fruit trees will provide food for the animals on the campus, shade, and habitation, in addition to enhancing the attractiveness of the surroundings. At the ceremony, she was given the honor of planting a soursop tree. She noted that in her homeland, the soursop is a beloved fruit used to make delicious ice cream, a treat cherished by children.

The trees were contributed by the UNFCU and were planted by managers and staff of the entities on the UN Entebbe Campus.

“We were thrilled to be joined by the RSCE in this purpose-driven initiative that not only speaks to our Entebbe team’s passion for environmental protection, it underlines our impact strategy and a core value – practice sustainability.  This year marks the 10th Anniversary of UNFCU’s Global Sustainability Program. Our deep commitment to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the communities we serve is inspired by our members’ tireless work.” Said Martha Ludigo Nyenje, Senior Manager, UNFCU Entebbe Representative Office
