Advancing Peacekeeping: UNCAP's M-UAS Workshop Showcases Technological Integration in Valencia
Valencia, Spain — The UN C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations (UNCAP) recently hosted a unique and highly anticipated Micro-Unmanned Aerial Systems (M-UAS) Workshop at the UN Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Valencia, Spain. This event, which ran from 3 to 6 June 2024, brought together various missions (MINUSCA, MONUSCO, and UNSOS), subject matter experts, partners and member states like France and Spain with funding from the Government of Japan, Denmark, and Canada, and technical support from the Government of Uganda.
The four-day workshop featured a blend of theoretical and practical sessions designed to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of UAS operators and trainers across UN missions. Keynote addresses from experts and practical sessions with advanced UAS simulators underscored the tangible benefits of technology integration in field operations and training methodologies.
Over four days, participants were immersed in sessions that featured advanced UAS simulators, drone control software, LiDAR technology, and data management systems. These sessions aimed to refine the operational competencies of UAS operators and trainers, with a particular focus on the practical aspects of UAS operations in peacekeeping scenarios.
The workshop concluded with forward-thinking sessions on drone digital forensics and counter-UAS programs, addressing the evolving nature of threats and the need for sophisticated countermeasures. It also marked the refinement of the UAS Operator and Trainer of Trainers (TOT) syllabi, which are crucial for standardising training across UN missions and enhancing operational effectiveness.
Looking ahead, UNCAP is committed to further advancing peacekeeping technology through initiatives like the development of Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) courses and the establishment of new training facilities. The workshop underscored the crucial role of ongoing partnerships and international collaboration in achieving the objectives of peace operations worldwide, and this commitment would continue to be a driving force in our future endeavours.
The UNCAP M-UAS workshop in Valencia is a testament to the UN's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies into peacekeeping operations. It provided a platform for significant knowledge exchange and skill enhancement, contributing to the advancements in the capabilities of UN peacekeepers and ultimately supporting global peace and security.
