UNITAMS Hands Over Residual Liquidation Activities to RSCE and GPSS
In accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolution 2715 (2023), the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission to Sudan (UNITAMS) mandate ended on 3 December 2023 and the mission ceased its operations and transferred its programmatic tasks to UN agencies, funds, and programs, with the liquidation phase beginning on 1 March 2024.
Following UNITAMS closure, and successful liquidation, the Liquidation Team handed over Financial Management and Human Resources and Travel related residual activities to Regional Service Centre in Entebbe (RSCE) and Contracts residual activities to Global Procurement Support Section (GPSS) on 23 July 2024.
In his remarks at the handover ceremony, UNITAMS head of the Liquidation team Mr. Seetharam Reddy Nandhyala commended the RSCE on the support provided to the team throughout the liquidation process and assured RSCE and GPSS of their availability for guidance up until 31 August 2024.
Paulin Djomo, Director RSCE also commented on the liquidation process and clarified that the work was not yet complete as there were still a number of staffing issues to sort out especially in terms of staff placements and vendor processes. He assured the Head of the liquidation team that RSCE would do all possible to support placement of staff to other missions and agencies.
UNITAMS was established in 2020 as a special political mission, to provide support to Sudan for an initial 12-month period during its political transition to democratic rule. On 3 June 2021, the Security Council adopted resolution 2579 (2021) extending the mandate of UNITAMS for a further 12 months, until 3 June 2022. On 3 June 2022, the Security Council renewed UNITAMS mandate for an additional year until 3 June 2023, according to resolution 2636 (2022).
